Knee High

Poem — ©Jeff Franks

small face squinting eye burned by the sun,
tender small face deep furrowed with fun
friend and foe, answer question unspoken
unhidden emotion, in a heart left wide open

dirt and grime, follow hurt and whine
small shoulder hump, stream at tree stump
scab and snot, Band-Aid and rope knot
pretty girl face, freckled face is not

pocket for cricket, cupped hands for frog
searching out salamander, under each log
Popsicle, bubble gum, strawberry Kool-Aid
score of chores, and new game to be played

dirt clod, tree fort, plastic submachine gun
chase, and race, in cool evening air run
mason jar, with ice pick hole lid
lightning bug dying, green glow quite morbid

boundless energy, that rarely is spent
small bottom in wet grass, with knees heaven bent
gazing at old star, restless curious kid
hoping that time could in timeless halt skid

wet grass and mosquito, subdue constellation
full moon, cloud thing give small consolation
mother's voice, blocks distant, implores
come home precious son, tomorrow explore
