Chuck Cannon

Red Clay Theater
Chuck Cannon is one of those performers that I make an effort to see any time possible. He is a phenomenally talented singer/songwriter; he has written or co-written so many hit songs that have been performed by the likes of the Toby Keith, The Judds, George Straight, Leanne Rhimes, Dolly Parton, Billy Dean - any many, many more. You get the idea, he is a very elite songwriter, but in my opinion, he performs his songs better than anyone else ever could.

His performances are incredible. The songs transect a broad spectrum of topics: religion, love, addiction, greed, politics, love, forgiveness, tolerance and much, much more. Between the songs, the songwriter provides background on the songs, whether it be inspiration or desperation, pain and suffering or joy and elation. Chuck is the guy everyone enjoys meeting, he makes a lasting impression and he never fails to put a smile on your face.

If you have never listened to Chuck's music you truly are missing out of something really special. Whiskey Drinking Preacher never fails to bring a tear to my eye, no how many times I listen. Let me give you just a taste, "Every sinner has a future, and every saint has got a past..." It's lyrics like these, simple truths that burn like a lighthouse for those of us drifting on the tide. His songs are not quite evangelistic, not quite sacrilegious, always irreverent, but buried in the lyrics are immutable truths; little pearls of wisdom. He never preaches at you, he just talks to you. He reminds me of just how deeply flawed I am; we can all use a healthy dose of that from time to time.

I have had the pleasure to share a few conversations with Chuck, all of which were enjoyable and entertaining. He's a true southern gentleman, cordial and kind and witty as the day is long. He's made an impression on me, I suppose that is pretty obvious, but it deserves mention. He is booked for a gig in Dahlonega on August 24th and I can't wait to see him again. The venue will be the Crimson Moon; it is intimate, has great sound and the proximity to the stage makes it a very personal experience. I will definitely be there, already bought a block of tickets and I plan to turn some good friends onto this very talented musician, singer and songwriter. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend you come on up and check him out.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the incredible musicianship of Tom Ryan, the bass player that accompanied Chuck on most of his songs tonight. Tom is a very friendly guy and his bass playing was superb. It was a real treat to meet and speak with him. Tom plays with Shawn Mullins normally, but came out to play with Chuck and everyone in the audience was so pleased he did.

What a wonderful show, and as Chuck noted, it's not every day that you play a gig and get Billy Dean to open for you. It was awesome. Eddie Owen has a fantastic venue in the Red Clay Theater. The acoustics are unmatched and it's a Goldilocks kind of place, not too big, not too small, it's just perfect. It just became my favorite venue and I promise to be back often, he books incredible acts and can't wait to see them there.

Finally, here are the URLs to Chuck's website, the Red Clay Theater website and The Crimson Moon. All three sites are worth a visit and tell them I sent you, they won't know who I am, but do it anyway; just kidding, ok, I am not kidding - do me a solid on this one - please.
